POP IT, SEE IT: Randy Tat offers a glimpse into the origins of Pop through a 6 feet tall coin-operated set of binoculars, the kind you might see at scenic viewpoints anywhere in the country, from the Empire State Building to the Grand Canyon. Made out of vintage tin, recycled wood, metal and found objects hand-painted with acrylics and oils, the piece is decorated with framed images by Jasper Johns, Liechtenstein, Peter Blake, Raushenberg, Oyvind Fahlstrom, artists who evoke a particular time marked by excess, affluence, experimentation, easy availability and a new understanding of objects, commercialism and art. Pop a coin in the slot, push the red button to focus your gaze, as flashing tractor lights blink, the crystals which hang from silver industrial chains to each side adding to the dizzying high, the attached pill box advising, “Take one tablet a day for vertigo.” Peer inside the shadow box through a looking glass of fluttering butterflies, flying nuns, mirrored disco balls, Elton John goggles and 3 D altered hologram images refracting Pop as lifestyle, cultural movement, generational community and artistic phenomenon. See signs of the times through a Pop eye… If dizziness continues, please call your doctor.
